The Mexican Patriotic Committee was formed in 1980 and has been organizing the Vegas Spring Festival, The Cinco De Mayo, Mexican Independence Celebration and Christmas in the Barrio in order for Mexicans to continue with our traditions and honor the Mexican Holidays
Since 1980 and with the participation of the Corporate world the Mexican Patriotic Committee has been able to help our Hispanic community, a group that represents a 26% of the County's population and 33% of the labor force, a segment that may not speak much English, but spend MUCHO DINERO... how much? let's say $20 million dollars a day in products and goods, the Hispanics take pride in their heritage and the contributions they make to Southern Nevada.
Under the present concept the Mexican Patriotic Committee has been
able to present over $150,000 in scholarships, donations of $5,000 to ABC Therapy, $10,000 to NALA a check for $5,000 to Rafael Vega the Honorary Consul of Mexico at the time, $5,000 to the Mexico Vivo, a Folkloric dancing entity. Presently the MPC is providing computer and musical classes, English and citizenship education all free of charge to our Hispanic community.
In 1995 the MPC set up a program called "Christmas in the Barrio" a very typical Mexican tradition where children rich or poor receive a bag of goodies and a present. The project went very well and at that very first "Christmas in the Barrio" over 500 kids attended and walk out very happy. The Christmas in the Barrio has became an annual tradition and at the 2006 event more then 3000 happy Hispanic children were greeted by First Lady Dema Gwinn who also helped in the distribution of toys and goodies, so did the staff of Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, as well as a good number of the sponsors and they were very impressed with what they witnessed. The MPC has established itself as the most recognized local Hispanic 501-C-3 nonprofit tax exempt organization in Clark County that meets most accountability standards set by the federal government such low fund-raising and administrative costs, documentation of the assistance the organization provides, governed by an active and responsible Board of Directors under the direction of Edmundo "Eddie" Escobedo, a president that has the right contacts and can show a potential sponsor how its philanthropy dollars can help its bottom line and market to the Hispanic community by utilizing the Mexican Patriotic Committee.
